Well even Base Camp is like 5,000 metres up. So yeah, worthy achievement definitely. Doing it at almost 60? That’s tough. And to think I’ve been admiring a couple of 70+ year olds that come into the gym about 3/4 times a week.

Oh my gosh, speaking of old ladies in the gym, the other day I went to the changing rooms after aerobics and there were these two women, stark naked, with shower caps on and booties, massaging each other very enthusiastically. We didn’t know whether to “Awww” or “Holy sheet.”

You know 3 people that reached the summit? That’s awesome.

I read a book when I was a child about some guy summitting Everest but he had parts of his body removed due to frostbite. As much as I really want a challenge as epic as climbing Everest, I don’t want to lose body parts over it.

I guess it changes year in, year out. I’m led to believe there’s an “ideal” summitting season and then the 9/10 months in between, with all the wind, could cause noticeable shifts in the structure of some of the ascents making it more dangerous.

Yep, all of the male gender shock horror. My “second Mum” was the one who climbed to Base camp, she’s nearly 60 and has never done anything of the sort in her life so it was a massive achievement (can you tell I’m more proud of her than my Dad’s friends?).

There are terrible, terrible stories about things that have gone wrong on the climb. Things you can’t even fathom. But then there are the many who actually make it with not one thing gone wrong.

I agree with you there, though Base camp to me sounds like a challenge I could mull over participating in. In the distant future however.

There’s about one month of ideal window opportune, then it’s gruel and grit. The face of Everest is never the same from one day to the next. It’s fascinating, but very scary at the same time.
